Although it may seem nice to travel to Europe for three weeks, in a tough economic time like this that is just implausible. So instead of spending a fortune on a short vacation somewhere far away, same some green and go green by spending sometime downtown. About.com has a nice collection of things to do an places to see while in downtown Chicago, ranging from summer festivals to beaches, museums and historic landmarks. One of the biggest festivals in Chicago is the Taste of Chicago. Live entertainment, food vendors from all over, and Chicago culminate in this ten day event that is one of the greatest known events in Chicago.
Another great resource for all your summer Stay-cation travels is the CTA and Metra websites. Both provide information about public transportation, including times, prices, and specials.
Happy traveling!

Summer School
Although summer is a popular time to sit back, relax, and enjoy some time off, many students pursue summer school and summer enrichment classes.
While the thoughts on summer school are divided, many educators vigorously enforce summer school classes. An editorial from Dennews.com stresses the importance of summer school classes and the work ethic while in one. It is very important to not slack off during a summer school class because of the shortened period of time that a semester long course is presented in. Therefore, according to the article, a week or so of material maybe missed becuase one day was missed or not fully paid attention to. Dennews.com also says that relaxing during the breaks is key to being able to recharge yourself and to perform well during the school year.
Another major proponent in summer school this year is online summer school. Some schools, such as the four high schools in Raleigh County, are not only launching new summer school programs but also a personalized online class that allows students to work at their own pace and learn the material they may have missed.
Another editorial from Denver has only good things to say about summer school, including higher test scores and better grades.
Whether your a senior in high school or getting ready to start freshman year this fall, summer school can only benefit you and should definitely be explored as a summer recreation idea.

Summer Camps
A favorite summer activity of students is enrichment camps. Enrichment camps cover everything under the sun, for photography to NASA camps.
For the Leyden students, some camps, not sleep-away camps, are offered right here at Leyden.
Both Leyden sports and academic camps are offered. For the sports lovers, a variety of sports camps are offered. Baseball, football, wrestling, badminton, volleyball, soccer, and swimming re just a selection of the camps offered. These camps aren't just for Leyden varsity athletes either. The surrounding junior high students can also opt to participate in the summer enrichment camps. Leyden's very own student athletes can also participate in any camps they want. Although the camps are staggered throughout the summer, some camps do overlap, so be sure to check location and time before making a choice.
On the academic side of things, summer school isn't just for the guy in 9th period who sleeps through geometry. For the incoming freshman, the mandatory computer literacy is offered. This opens up an elective for them during the school year. Global Studies is also offered. Upperclassmen can also take the consumer education class to free up a class in the fall. Sophmores can also take the state required behind-the-wheel drivers ed course. In addition to mandatory classes, other "fun" classes are offered. Criminalistics, creative writing, and philosphy are also offered. Perhaps the biggest summer school/camp course is the Leyden Marching Band. With almost 200 kids, the Leyden Marching Band performs in parades, at home football games, and other large scale and small scale events around the Chicagoland area. Marching Band is a course, and more information can be found at the Leyden Band website. A three day rehearsal (and sleep-away) camp takes place mid July as well.
Many colleges around Chicago offer camps. For example, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater offers a large selections of enrichment camps for high school and middle school students. Music, journalism, volleyball, philosphy, art, theater, and languages are just a few offered.
Eastern Illinois University is also a popular place for summer camps. Band, choir, and business are just a selection of camps offered. Check out the full website and search by subject to get more information.
With summer just around the corner, look into some enrichment camps to make the best of your summer.

It's Almost Here!
As finals approach, sports wind down, and the school year comes to a close, many students start thinking forward. By forward, I mean towards summer. Ah yes, summer. Summer for many and almost all students is a much deserved break from the long tedious hours of a rigorous course load during the school year. For others, it's a time to branch out and study abroad, take an enrichment course, or start an internship. No matter what you plan to do with your down time, you should make the best of it.
According to Matthew Pit, finding summer work is one of the best ways to spend your summer. His article, Finding Summer Work For Students: How To Do Something Productive With A Summer Vacation, has suggestions and tips to get a good summer job. He also says that having that time off will allow you to build up funds for college and other things.
If your not up for the work part just yet, take a day off with a group of friends. Go downtown and spend the day at Museum Campus. This fun outing is also extremely constructive because it allows you to learn more about history and science and allows for some hands on learning with a fun twist. It will also keep your mind in shape for the next year of tough courses.
Home bound? No problem! Grab a book, preferably an Abe Lincoln Award Nominees! Read four, and you can place your vote for the winner next February. These books are selected as ideal for teens. What else is there to do over the summer?
